Christina Restaino is the Director of the Living With Fire Program. She is also an Assistant Professor and Natural Resources Specialist with University of Nevada, Reno Extension, serving the state of Nevada, Great Basin, and Sierra Nevada regions. Her emphasis is on wildland fire science, forestry, and natural resource management. Her research has looked at the intersection of land management and forest resilience to fire, drought, and climate change. She has worked extensively in science outreach and communication, translating ecological principles to resource management and forest and fire policy. Christina’s work has spanned the western United States. She received her Bachelor’s of Science in Natural Resource Management at UC Berkeley, her Master’s of Science and Doctorate in Environmental and Forest Sciences from University of Washington, and completed her postdoctoral studies at UC Davis.

Photo of Frank Frievalt

Chief Frank Frievalt (ret.) has served since 1979 with Special District, City, County, State, and Federal fire agencies in roles from Firefighter to Fire Chief. He holds a M.S. from Oklahoma State University in Fire and Emergency Management Administration, and currently serves as Director of the Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Institute at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Frank is an SME for the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Wildfire Advisory Council, and previously served as a Senior Policy Advisor to the Western Fire Chiefs Association, with an emphasis on the development of resilient Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) communities. His work is grounded in aligning key stakeholders around a core set of parcel and community level mitigations that will disrupt the fire pathways which lead to conflagration. He is pursuing the actuarial valuation of risk mitigations, for both the public and private sectors, because we share the same desired outcome, minimizing property loss to the peril of wildfire.

Workshops:

  • Getting Your Community Organized
This workshop offers practical strategies for organizing within their communities. Participants will learn about key roles—Organizer, Communicator, Energizer, and Networker—and explore how to assign them effectively to create a more resilient and engaged community
  • Strategic Community Action Planning
This goal-oriented workshop focuses on creating a vision and actionable plan for the next two years. Participants will assess their community’s needs using the Fire Adapted Communities (FAC) wheel and work collaboratively to prioritize goals and identify steps to achieve them
